How to Use Tire Temperatures for Setup Changes

A practical guide to reading inside, middle, and outside tire temperatures for pressure, camber, and balance changes after autocross, track day, or race sessions.

Collect the readings before they cool

Tire temperatures are time-sensitive. The useful signal is closest to the run, before the tire surface equalizes and before paddock driving changes the pattern. The goal is not perfect lab data. The goal is consistent trackside data that can support the next setup decision.

Measure the same way every time

Use the same tire order, the same inside-middle-outside locations, and the same timing after each run. If one session is measured immediately and the next is measured after a long drive back to paddock, the comparison is weaker.

  • Record inside, middle, and outside temperatures for all four tires.
  • Take readings as soon as safely possible after the run.
  • Use the same probe depth or infrared method each time.
  • Note whether the run was clean, dirty, traffic-affected, or a cooldown.

Do not over-read one tire

One strange tire can be a setup clue, a driver-line clue, a measurement mistake, or a course-specific artifact. Look for patterns across an axle, across left and right, and across repeated runs before making a major change.

Read pressure, camber, and balance separately

A tire temperature sheet gets confusing when every pattern is treated as the same problem. Middle temperature, inside-to-outside spread, and front-to-rear average each answer a different question.

Middle temperature points toward pressure

If the middle of the tire is consistently hotter than both edges, pressure may be too high for the tire, load, and surface. If both edges are hotter than the middle, pressure may be too low or the tire may be rolling over. Confirm with wear marks and driver feedback before making a large pressure move.

Inside-to-outside spread points toward camber

A hotter outside edge can suggest too little negative camber, too much rollover, or a line that overloads the tire. A much hotter inside edge can suggest too much negative camber for the available load. The best camber decision also considers tire wear, pyrometer method, and whether pressures were already in a reasonable window.

Axle averages point toward balance

If the front tires are much hotter than the rear and the driver reports push, the front may be doing too much work. If the rear tires are much hotter and the driver reports loose exit, the rear may be overloaded. Temperature supports the handling note; it does not replace it.

Turn the pattern into one next test

The right tire temperature conclusion is usually a next test, not a permanent answer. Conditions change, drivers adapt, and a setup can look different after pressures stabilize.

Recommended decision order

  • Fix obvious pressure problems before judging camber.
  • Judge camber only after tire pressure and driving line are reasonably consistent.
  • Use front-to-rear balance only when the readings match the driver feedback.
  • Repeat the same measurement after the change before stacking another adjustment.

Know when the data is not clean enough

If the run had a cone hit, spin, traffic, a missed braking point, or a long cooldown before readings, mark the result as low confidence. Bad tire-temp data can still be useful as a note, but it should not drive an aggressive setup change.
