How to Diagnose Understeer and Oversteer at an Autocross

Start with the corner phase

A car that pushes on turn-in is telling a different story than a car that pushes while waiting on throttle. A car that is loose at corner entry is not the same problem as a car that steps out when power comes in. The first diagnostic question is when the balance problem happens.

Entry, middle, and exit mean different things

Corner entry issues usually involve braking, trail braking, front tire load, rear stability, and how quickly weight transfers. Mid-corner issues often point toward steady-state grip, roll balance, camber, tire pressure, or line. Exit issues add throttle, differential behavior, rear grip, and how fast the car accepts power.

  • Entry understeer: the front tires do not respond when the driver asks the car to rotate.

If the car only pushes after a late turn-in, early throttle, or pinched radius, the fastest fix may be the line. If the same symptom repeats with a clean line and similar tire temperature, the setup signal is stronger.

  • Look for the same balance problem in more than one similar corner.
  • Compare whether the symptom appears on left and right turns.
  • Check whether the problem gets worse as tires heat up.
  • Avoid changing camber, bar, shock, and pressure all at once.
