Comparing lap and sector deltas
This calculator totals two three-sector laps, reports the new lap’s time difference, identifies the largest sector change, and combines the quickest sectors into a theoretical best.
Inputs and calculation
- Baseline and new times for sectors 1, 2, and 3, all in seconds.
Lap delta = new lap total − baseline lap total. A negative result means the new lap was faster.
Best theoretical lap = the quicker of the two times in sector 1 + the quicker in sector 2 + the quicker in sector 3.
How to interpret the result
- The largest absolute sector delta points to where the biggest time change occurred. The theoretical best shows the available combination, not a lap that was actually completed.
Assumptions and limits
- Sector boundaries and timing sources must match. Compare laps with similar traffic, weather, tire state, fuel load, and driver intent before attributing the delta to a setup change.
- Three sectors simplify analysis; the result does not explain why time changed inside a sector.
Example: mixed sector gains
Baseline sectors of 32.4, 35.8, and 28.1 total 96.3 seconds. New sectors of 32.1, 36.0, and 27.7 total 95.8, so the delta is −0.50 second and the theoretical best is 95.60 seconds.
